    Where to Stay in Penang

Featuring a vibrant landscape with faded two-storey shop houses and ornate temples, Penang is one of Asia’s most fascinating islands. The oldest of the British Straits settlements, the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ is one of the country’s most cosmopolitan cities and has managed to preserve its colonial past. Penang’s north coast has been aggressively marketed in recent times with the result that it’s experienced a boom in hotels and resorts.

For the moment Georgetown’s status as Malaysia’s second-largest city means it’s got no shortage of accommodation options. Budget lodging can be found on and around Lebuh Chulia, usually within ramshackle wooden-shuttered mansions, often with a portico and elegant internal staircase. Midrange options, consisting of a string of high-rises, are mostly found along Jln Penang. Meanwhile top-range ventures are located along the Batu Ferringhi stretch. If you’re searching for a good way to immerse yourself in Penang’s colonial past while also experiencing red carpet treatment, then Penang’s numerous spa hotels and resorts are the ideal choice.

  • Divided into two wings (with a separate driveway and entrance for each), the five-star Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa is a pretty impressive property spread out across 30 acres along the famous Batu Ferringgi beach. The whole hotel has been fitted out in traditional Minangkabau style - in fact, in line with this, the hotel hosts a time-honoured Malay musical performance every Friday outside its Garden Wing lobby. We love the five-storey Rasa Wing: built in 1973, it has an exclusive feel, offering guests little extras such as afternoon tea, all day cocktails and evening canapes. This side of the hotel is home to Ferringgi Grill, an award-winning, fine-dining restaurant, plus the property also plays host to five other restaurants and bars. Hard Rock Hotel Penang

    Ferringgi Beach

With busts of The Beatles in the lobby and autographed Sex Pistols albums in the corridors, there is little doubt about the four-star Hard Rock Hotel Penangs theme - its extravagant Vegas-esque vibe is a refreshing departure from traditional beachside hotels.Everything spells stardom, from the giant music-related murals and rock star memorabilia to the open-air lobby with a reception/bar combo. The hottest action revolves around the energetic Hard Rock Cafe, which acts as regular host to live bands.Perfect for entourage wannabes is the sexy, see-and-be-seen-in freeform pool, but we also dig the for-hire mountain bikes, poolside dancing sessions, and canoe racing and pool-pillow fights.
